You are what you eat — foods that can improve your skin

An unhealthy diet can result in damaging metabolism and organs such as your liver and skin tend to take the brunt of a poor diet. Diet can play a major role in the health and ageing of your skin so here are our top two diet essentials to give your skin a head start:

Let’s start with good fats:

Healthy fats are required in your body as they cannot be self-produced. There are two types of fats that assist in healthy skin which are omega 6 fatty acids and omega 3 fatty acids. The integration of these fats into your diet with minimising unhealthy saturated fat consumption such as fried food will allow healthy fats to nourish your skin, enhance radiance and softness to your complexion.

Omega 6 fatty acids food sources are seeds, nuts, green vegetables and avocados. Avocados are a good source of Vitamin C which protects skin from sun damage that can increase wrinkles. Vitamin C also has the added benefit that it promotes collagen production that helps to keep your skin strong.

Omega 3 can be found in foods such as salmon, sardines and soybeans. Omega 3 is necessary to help keep your skin feeling moisturised, reduce inflammation such as acne and redness which is one of the top concerns in both men and women. Fish is a source of vitamin E which is a must to help protect skin against damage.

Fruits:

If you have been experiencing skin issues such as dullness or wrinkles, the secret behind rejuvenated skin is lots of fresh fruit! Blueberries, blackberries, and watermelon are infused with vitamin C.  Papaya with its papain enzyme is an excellent skin smoother, both included in your diet and skin products. Cherries, dates, mangos, acai and pomegranates will feed and nourish your skin in ways you never imagined. By adding fruit to your diet you're essentially saying goodbye to those wrinkles. Again, be sure to eat fruit that is as deeply colored as you possibly can.

Skincare products alone become wasteful if diets are not in check. To achieve overall healthy skin requires a balance of a good diet and effective skincare products, it takes two to tango!
